Miscellaneous correspondence, 1890-1913

 Sub-Series — Box: OVZ 2
Identifier: IV.B.

Scope and Contents

Contents: Letters.

This subseries represents Saulsbury’s correspondence from the years before he was elected to the Senate. It is not, however, a complete inventory of all his correspondence from this time. This file generally does not contain any letters related to topics filed in other subseries. For instance, there are few letters directly related to a particular election, although many letters refer to the events of an election year. In essence, this subseries contains all the letters addressed to Willard Saulsbury and his responses, which cannot be filed anywhere else. This subseries does not contain letters related to the most important issues of his day, but it does provide a perspective on the general topics which interested Saulsbury and his correspondents.

The letters in each file are arranged alphabetically. Generally, the file name is that of the author, but there are some exceptions. First, replies or copies of replies from Saulsbury are filed under the name of the recipient. Second, letters to companies were filed under the company name unless Saulsbury knew the correspondent personally and was accustomed to working directly with that person. Finally, there are some files in which individuals are themselves topics, and the letters in these files may be written by various authors referring to the subject individual. For example, when Saulsbury’s interactions with one party led him to involve additional parties, all the letters were kept under the name of the first party.
