George Messersmith-Dannie Heineman correspondence, 1949-1960
Scope and Contents
The Messersmith-Heineman exchange includes letters, news clippings, memoranda, telegrams, broadly covering political and economic affairs in Mexico and South America, the role of foreign investors in Mexico, the business relationship between Mexican Light and Power Co. and SOFINA, ongoing interest in foreign affairs and news from the U.S. State Department, and personal news. The Danie Heineman papers were a gift to the Library in 1983 from James H. Heneman, Danie Heineman's son.

Biographical / Historical
Dannie N. Heineman was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 1872, educated in Germany, obtaining a degree in electrical engineering. Heineman met Messersmith in 1919 when Messersmith was American Consul in Antwerp and the two became lifelong friends. Heineman served as financial adviser to the kings of Belgium and was affiliated with SOFINA, among other companies. SOFINA was the major stockholder of of Mexican Light and Power Co., Ltd., of which Messersmith became chairman of the board in 1947.
