Dandy stereotypes, 1882, 1950, undated

 File — Box: 3, Folder: F1

Scope and Contents

Portrayals of Black men wearing particularly fancy, sometimes outlandish, clothes. A specific type of dandy, included here, was the "Zip Coon" minstrel character, whose comedy was derived from failed attempts to imitate upper class white culture. The “Zip Coon” character was an urban counterpart to the “Jim Crow” character.
