Gabriel Wells, a steadfast supporter of Wise, wrote this letter of the Saturday Review of Literature denouncing An Enquiry . In pencil across the top, the letter reads, "Do not print. Cable from Gabriel Wells to that effect," suggesting that Wells may have hesitated to see his own defense of Wise in print.
