Scope and Content Note

This collections of diaries and photographs belonged to Benjie Henderson, a young woman living near Newark, Delaware. These personal diaries were written between 1862 and 1870. They reflect the daily life of Ms. Henderson as a young school girl and later as school teacher. They reflect her feelings about teaching, her daily routines, and other personal reflections. The diaries also detail her love of home and the homesickness she felt during the week when she lived in a boarding house while she taught school. Also contained in the diaries are detailed monthly financial accounts kept by Ms. Henderson. The collections also consists of 37 photographs, several of which are labeled "B. Henderson Coyle."
