Scope and Content Note
The Luella Delamartre Dawson photographs of China consists of 132 black and white snapshots taken during Mrs. Delamartre's travels in China between 1923 and 1925.
The photographs depict public scenes in Peking, Shanghai, Szechuan, Shantung, Hsiling, and Soochow. Included about the snapshots are images of Chefoo Harbor, the Great Wall of China, the Summer Palace and its Jade Gridle Bridge, Peking's Temple of Heaven and Yellow Temples, Peking's Forbidden City, and the countryside of China.
The photographs capture various aspects of Chinese life and culture, including a funeral procession, a wedding ceremony, Confucian temples and ceremonies, Taoist priests, Sikh policemen, a Maj Jong factory, the Chinese marketplace, eating in the streets, Llama priests and their performance of the Devil Dance, a Manchu prince and other dignitaries.
The photographs provide a representative portrait of life in pre-Communist China during the early 1920s.
