Scope and Content Note

Prominent Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Quaker James Moon recorded his travels in Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Virginia between 1742 and 1792 in this brief, handwritten account. He lists dates, names of persons encountered, destinations, and routes, as well as accounts of Quaker meeting places.

Moon visited the various locations in Virginia, Delaware, and Chester County, Pennsylvania, as well as the Shrewsbury Friends' Meeting held in New Jersey. The journal comprises five leaves of closely written notes, including details such as dates and distance traveled; the names of traveling companions; and individuals visited. Moon mentions having visited the Shipley family while visiting Wilmington, Delaware.

The manuscript consists of eight unbound pages with five leaves containing autograph entries in ink. Included is a note in pencil near the end of the manuscript dated 1983, identifying the diary as James Moon's, signed by a Terry Abford.

Biographical Note

Prominent Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Quaker James Moon (1713-1796) was active in the eighteenth-century antislavery movement and resided on his Bucks County farm called Woodbourne, which remained within the family at least until the early twentieth century.

Eldest son of Roger Moon and Ann (Nutt) Moon, James Moon married three times: first to Hannah Price (d. 1738) in 1737, to Elizabeth Lucas (d. 1748), and to Ann Watson. He had five children in all, three of whom survived to adulthood.
