Holograph calligraphy manuscript of Philip Whalen's Three Mornings, which was published by Don Allen's Four Seasons Foundation. Inscribed by Whalen to Allen and with small printer's instructions in one corner.

Philip Whalen Three Mornings, 1963, comprises a holograph calligraphy manuscript of the poem, published as a broadside by Don Allen's Four Seasons Foundation. The single leaf, approximately 11.5 x 15 inches, bears Whalen's inscription: "This is the original, for Donald M. Allen, ESQ. with all the joys of the season, viz. 5th of July, 1964, Philip Whalen." Lightly penciled in the lower right hand corner are instructions to the printer, "B6931 84%."

Philip Whalen (1923-2002)

American poet Philip Whalen was born in Oregon. He lived for a time in Japan and was deeply affected by Zen Buddhism. He is associated with the Beat movement and his poetry often included unusual typographical and visual effects. His collections of poetry include Another Direction (1959), Memoirs of an Inter-Glacial Age (1960), Like I Say (1960), Monday in the Evening (1964), Every Day (1965), Highgrade (1966), On Bear's Head (1969), and The Kindness of Strangers (1976).
