Journal of a lady’s travels in Georgia

 Collection
Identifier: MSS 0097-Item 0133

Scope and Content Note

This anonymous journal documents a woman's travels through the state of Georgia in November 1851.

This journal contains seventeen pages of autograph writing chronicling a woman’s trip through the Antebellum South to Georgia. She described travel by boat from November 12-13, 1851, and provided descriptions of a storm that caused the boat to run aground several times. The author also described interactions with other passengers, including a Colonel Hardie, his wife, children, and slaves. On November 13, she arrived in Montgomery, Georgia, near Savannah. She then described her travels by stage and rails through Atlanta and other towns. She focused on the discomforts of travel, small mishaps, the quality of hotels, and conversations with people she encountered. The entries end shortly after she arrived in Savannah on November 16, leaving most of the pages blank.

The front cover of the journal and several pages are loose.
