Scope and Contents

This collection comprises a single, illustrated autograph letter signed with an additionally initialed post script from Irish illustrator and caricaturist Harry Furniss (1854-1925) to literary hostess Lady St. Helier.

The letter is written on printed letterhead of The Mount, High Wickham, Hastings, and is dated 12 June 1909. In the letter, Furniss sends Lady St. Helier his permanent address and notifies her of her previous note’s arrival. Included in the letter is an illustration of a group of people (and two cats) seated and absorbed in reading.

Henry (Harry) Furniss (1854-1925)

Irish caricaturist and illustrator Henry (Harry) Furniss (1854-1925) worked for a wide range of periodicals, including The Graphic, Black and White, Good Words, Pall Mall, Pearson’s, and Punch.

Furniss joined the Punch staff in 1884 and remained there for fourteen years, during which time he drew 2,600 cartoons and illustrations. In addition, Furniss wrote and illustrated twenty-nine books, and contributed to thirty-four works written by other authors, including those of Charles Dickens, William Thackeray, and Lewis Carroll.
