Scope and Contents

Artist Michael Kubsch, also known as “Malok,” mailed these collages, notes, and illustrations to Chloe’s Books between 1994 and 2007.

Each of the seven letters is accompanied by a business-size envelope, addressed to Chloe’s Books, with rubberstamps on the outside, many of which Kubsch designed. Each envelope contains several items created by Kubsch, including black and white collages, color glyphs, handwritten notes with holograph signatures, and small illustrations. The collages and glyphs are photocopy reproductions of Kubsch’s collages and drawings.

Biographical / Historical

Michael Kubsch, also known as “Malok,” is a practitioner of collage and mail art. In 1978, he illustrated Poems to Trémone: lies of an orphan mind, a book of poetry by Robert J. Kachur. At the time of his correspondence with Chloe’s Books, Kubsch resided in Waukau, Wisconsin.

Several of the letters contain references to Bern Porter (1911-2004), an early practitioner of mail art.

Chloe’s Books was established in Loomis, California, in 1972. They are a mail-order business specializing in poetry and modern literature.
