Jean François Millet letter to "My Dear Ledouin"
Scope and Contents
Addressed to “Mon cher Ledouin,” French artist Jean François Millet wrote this letter from Barbizon, France, on August 27, 1868. The letter is framed with a portrait of the artist by Wyatt Eaton.
In this affectionate letter, Millet thanked Ledouin for his kind thoughts and asked if he would see his friend soon.
The letter is handwritten in black ink and signed “J.F. Millet.” It is framed alongside a black-and-white portrait of Millet by American artist Wyatt Eaton. The items are surrounded by beige matting and a gold frame.

Biographical
French artist Jean François Millet was born on October 4, 1814 in the Norman village of Gruchy. He began studying art in Cherbourg and in 1837 received funding to study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. In 1849 he moved to Barbizon in Fontainebleau forest, where he remained the rest of his life. In the 1860s, Millet began to attract the attention of a widening group of critics and collectors. He showed nine paintings at the Paris Universal Exposition of 1867, among them The Gleaners and The Angelus, which had earned him the cross of the Legion of Honor in 1865. Millet died in Barbizon on January 20, 1975.
