Jacob H. and William H. Wehner medical notebooks

 Collection
Identifier: MSS 0097-Item 0141

Scope and Content Note

These two volumes were created by Philadelphia-area physicians Jacob H. Wehner and William H. Wehner between 1867 and 1868. They contain notes taken from various medical journal articles, notes from lectures given on medical topics at Jefferson Medical College (Philadelphia), and case studies of their own patients and those of other physicians.

Both volumes contain notes taken from articles in domestic and international medical journals. The topics covered in these notes describe new treatments and developments in the medical field such as the "hypodermic method introducing remedies." The collection also contains notes on lectures given at Jefferson Medical College by several professors on proper medical practices and treatments for common conditions.

There are many case studies of patients attended to by the Wehners and other physicians. These case studies include the supervising physician's name, a history of the patient's symptoms, and the course of treatment. The prescriptions and medicines given to the patients are also listed. Prescriptions for various conditions and diseases used by several physicians are spread throughout the two volumes.

Accompanying the two volumes is an undated pamphlet titled "Gonorrhea in Males." It covers the origin, course, and treatments for the disease. Various treatments used by several American physicians are included. The collection as a whole provides an in-depth look at the medical profession of the mid-19th century.

Both volumes are bound notebooks with board covers and leather spines.
