Scope and Contents

This chromolithographic print produced by E.G. Renesch in 1918 depicts an African American World War I infantryman parting with a woman in a blue dress as he goes off to war. It is captioned "COLORED MAN IS NO SLACKER."

The couple at the center of the print stands on a walkway surrounded by flowers. In the background of the image, a group of African American soldiers march. One soldier carries an American flag. "1918 E.G. RENESCH, CHICAGO" is printed on the bottom left-hand corner of the recto of the chromolithograph. “Mrs. Reb Byrd” is inscribed on the verso.

The collection also contains an undated black-and-white photograph of an unidentified group of men and women by the Philadelphia photography firm Gilbert & Bacon. The photograph was originally housed in a frame behind the Colored Man is No Slacker poster.

Edward George Renesch (1879-1957), who signed his works as E. G. Renesch, was an American illustrator based in Chicago, Illinois.
