Land indenture between Hugh and Ann Glasford and Robert Ferguson for property in the White Clay Creek Hundred

 Collection
Identifier: MSS 0098-F0173

Scope and Content Note

This document is a land indenture between Hugh Glasford, an inn-keeper from Newark, Delaware, and his wife Ann, and Robert Ferguson, a yeoman, also from Newark. It is for 223 acres in the White Clay Creek Hundred, dated February 21, 1780. Ferguson paid 5,680 pounds and 15 shillings for the land. The indenture was acknowledged in the Court of Common Pleas in New Castle.

The indenture traces the owners of the land back to the original patent under the seal of the province of Pennsylvania to John Guest, a prominent jurist of Philadelphia, in 1702. It also traces the boundaries of the property and gives the location of the other deeds referred to in the document.

The deed is handwritten on paper, tied with ribbon and stamped with two paper and wax seals. The document is in fragile condition.
