Scope and Contents

J. Carroll Tobias (1899-1996) was a multi-talented artist involved in commercial illustration and printing. The J. Carroll Tobias papers comprise correspondence and paper samples (1930-1940). The correspondence (bulk 1930-1932) consists of letters to Tobias regarding his clients, submissions of his own work for publication, and inquiries about paper samples and other products. The bulk of the paper samples likely come from an edition of Direct Advertising (circa 1930), a publication by the Paper Makers’ Advertising Club that included a section of paper samples from throughout the United States.
