Scope and Contents

A fold-out map with 14 panels produced and sold by the Gulf Oil Corporation. A fold-out map produced and sold by the Gulf Oil Corporation. The map depicts the election results from 1960, lists all previous presidents, describes the election process for President of the United States, and shows the number of electoral votes allotted to each state for 1964.

One side of the map depicts a map of the United States. Each state is identified by name, year it became a state, the population of the state (believed to be the 1960 Census population), the name and location of the state capital, and the total number of electoral votes allotted to each state in 1964. The map is colored to show when each part of the United States land area was acquired. Surrounding the map are portraits of the 35 men who had served as president of the United States through 1964, and includes each man's name, date of birth, place of birth, and the years of their presidency. This side of the map, when unfolded, shows the front and back covers of the map. The front cover shows a color picture of the White House, and the back cover describes Gulf Oil's sponsorship of election coverage for NBC. This map is stamped "Cutler's Gulf Service Station, 4th and Vine Streets, Phila. 6, Pa."

The other side of the map includes a large quantity of information about the United States government and the presidential election process. The map describes the three branches of government, the duties of and qualifications to serve in each federal office, the responsibilities of the president, the line of succession to the presidency before the passage of the 25th Amendment, a brief history of the Democratic and Republican parties, the popular vote and Electoral College tallies for the 1960 election, all previous presidents and vice presidents, and the mechanics of the Electoral College.

Gulf Oil and the 1964 Presidential Election

Gulf Oil, one of the major global oil companies for most of the twentieth century, was the sole corporate sponsor for the National Broadcasting Company's (NBC) 1964 election coverage. The deal was reportedly for $5,000,000, with Gulf Oil fully sponsoring coverage of both the political conventions in the summer of 1964 and special election night coverage on NBC on November 3, 1964.

At this time, having one advertiser as the sole sponsor for election-related coverage was rare.
