Greenwatch Institute was created in 1992 as the result of a legal settlement with Keystone Cogenerations Systems Inc., in which a trust fund was established to be used for projects benefitting the environment. Greenwatch Institute administers those funds. Delaware author and environmentalist Jerry Shields was chairman of Greenwatch Institute from its founding until his death in 1998.
