Carty family papers

Abstract

The Carty family papers, 1815-1912, represent nearly a century of the business activities as well as the personal lives of various members of the Carty family of New Jersey. The collection also includes papers of the Shreve family, which seems to have been related to the primary family in some way. The material consists mainly of receipts, account ledgers, and personal and business correspondence.

Abstract This journal chronicles abolitionist Milton M. Fisher’s 1834 journey from his home in Franklin, Massachusetts, to Virginia, and back. The trip, taken for both health reasons and as an information gathering expedition for anti-slavery efforts, took Fisher through numerous northern states, the Mid-Atlantic region (including Maryland and Delaware), and Washington, D.C., to Virginia. Robert Kirkwood documents from the collection of Helen and Paul Elm

Abstract

This collection features a letter, dated June 23, 1777, from Captain Robert Kirkwood of Newark, Delaware, to his father (Robert Kirkwood, Sr.) during the Continental Army’s New Jersey Campaign of the American Revolutionary War. The collection also contains military records related to officer appointments, muster rolls, subsistence rolls, and clothing supplies.

Thomas Scattergood journal

Abstract

This journal was created by Thomas Scattergood (1748-1814), a Quaker minister, pioneer of mental health reform, and early advocate for the creation of Friends Asylum (later Friends Hospital) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It describes his travels to various Quaker Meetings in New Jersey and New York between 1789 and 1792.
