Sketches

The Jeffrey Bailey collection of James Leo Herlihy papers is a combination of correspondence and personal papers originated by American author and actor James Leo Herlihy and literary papers belonging to Herlihy’s long-time friend and literary executor, American author Jeffrey Bailey.

The papers of American photojournalist, restaurateur, and peace activist Karl Bissinger (1914-2008) encompass nearly seventy years of professional activity. This collection not only provides abundant documentation of Bissinger's careers in photography and social activism, but also offers rich visual resources for the history of photography in post-World War II America.

Gérard Charrière (1935- ) is a Swiss book artist and painter. The Gérard Charrière papers consist of correspondence, artists' books, catalogs, brochures, periodicals, postcards, artworks, sketches, and printed ephemera collected and created by Charrière. The bulk of the collection comprises correspondence and materials from Charrière’s artist friends and colleagues.

Philadelphia chemist John Davis’s manuscript book is filled with medicinal formulae and numerous laid-in receipts and household hints. There are over 135 items as varied as medicinal receipts, graduation announcements, poetry, sketches, and a silhouette.

This bound volume of original graphite sketches, notes, and nature prints is attributed to Harriet Elliot (d. 1825), daughter of Gilbert Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound, 1st Earl of Minto. Minto House and the surrounding landscape in Roxburghshire, Scotland, are the subjects of this sketchbook, with contents dated between 1807-1808. The volume also includes copied verse and studies of geometry and perspective.

This sketchbook was created by American journalist and author Mary Wager Fisher (d. 1915) and includes full-color drawings and pencil sketches from the 1870s and 1880s. Most of the drawings depict plants observed around Seattle, Washington, but Fisher also included sketches of buildings, household objects, and people observed elsewhere.

British attorney and author Sir Joseph Gold (1912-2000) was a collector of modern first editions of British and American writers and poets. The Sir Joseph Gold literary manuscript collection comprises correspondence, manuscripts, publishing files, and publications of mid-twentieth century British and American poets, publishers, and scholars.

The Rachel Leah Lindeman album is a presentation album which was given to Lindeman on March 18, 1862, in honor of her birthday. The album, which contains thirty-four pages of photographs, poems, artwork (pencil sketches, ink drawings, cartoons, illuminations, watercolors, etc.), elaborate calligraphy, and pressed flowers dating from 1862 to 1877, is a fine example of a Victorian presentation album with colonial Indian influences.

The William Livermore papers give a comprehensive account of the career of a U.S. Army engineer in the mid-to-late nineteenth century.

Volume II of the original holograph manuscript for "Devereux: a Tale," as written by Margaret Emily Shore in 1837. It includes a title-page, dedication, introduction, contents page, 264 pages of text for chapters X through XXII, and a pencil sketch of a seated woman (possibly a self portrait).

E. E. Thoyts “Old Paper Watermarks” contains manuscript materials on antique paper watermarks collected by Emma Elizabeth Thoyts (1860–1949), a British researcher who resided in Berkshire.
