Drawings (visual works)

The papers of Delaware artist Charles Allmond (1931-2019) document over three decades (1981-2013) of his prolific career. The collection comprises 3 linear feet and oversize removals that include drawings, designs, slides, sculptures, as well as files of correspondence and documentation for exhibitions in which his work was included.

This volume, entitled “Arbres de l’Amérique,” consists of 157 original pencil drawings (exact copies reduced to one third of the originals) of engraving taken from paintings by P.J. Redouté and Pancrace Bessa done for Francois-Andre Michaux’s North American Sylva, Paris, 1817-1819.

The Jeffrey Bailey collection of James Leo Herlihy papers is a combination of correspondence and personal papers originated by American author and actor James Leo Herlihy and literary papers belonging to Herlihy’s long-time friend and literary executor, American author Jeffrey Bailey.

The Seth C. Brace collection comprises eight original pencil sketches and one modern reproduction of an original watercolor depicting churches and landscapes surrounding Newark, Delaware, drawn by Delaware College mathematics professor Seth C. Brace between 1842 and 1844.

Includes one original drawing by American painter, illustrator, and author Joe Brainard (1942-1994).

Two volumes of drawings of Chinese life; on double leaves of pith paper. Some are colored. Bound in silk brocade, typical of albums meant for the western tourist trade.

Six disbound volumes and 6 separate drawings (2 color) of Chinese life. Originally on double leaves of pith paper, the bulk have been slit into separate leaves. Volumes identified by stab sewing holes; the 6 separate drawings were trimmed. Three volumes have original yellow front wrappers; 2 have in manuscript "Wm. Murray."

The Jeannette Slocomb Edwards papers consist of a photocopy of a Christmas poem, a handwritten Christmas/New Year's postcard with a drawing and poem by Edwards on the front, several newspaper clippings and an obituary related to Edwards, who was a poet laureate for the state of Delaware.

This bound volume of original graphite sketches, notes, and nature prints is attributed to Harriet Elliot (d. 1825), daughter of Gilbert Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound, 1st Earl of Minto. Minto House and the surrounding landscape in Roxburghshire, Scotland, are the subjects of this sketchbook, with contents dated between 1807-1808. The volume also includes copied verse and studies of geometry and perspective.

This sketchbook was created by American journalist and author Mary Wager Fisher (d. 1915) and includes full-color drawings and pencil sketches from the 1870s and 1880s. Most of the drawings depict plants observed around Seattle, Washington, but Fisher also included sketches of buildings, household objects, and people observed elsewhere.

Selected schoolwork in the subject of Language by first- through ninth-grade students from Worcester, Massachusetts. It was likely submitted to the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exhibition in St. Louis, Missouri.

The Rachel Leah Lindeman album is a presentation album which was given to Lindeman on March 18, 1862, in honor of her birthday. The album, which contains thirty-four pages of photographs, poems, artwork (pencil sketches, ink drawings, cartoons, illuminations, watercolors, etc.), elaborate calligraphy, and pressed flowers dating from 1862 to 1877, is a fine example of a Victorian presentation album with colonial Indian influences.

This volume contains an extensive history of the Martin family of Chester County and Delaware County, Pennsylvania, created by John Hill Martin. Martin created the history during the 1870s-1890s, but included materials from both the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

The Thomas Parkinson papers consist of typescripts and manuscripts of poetry and prose by Parkinson, Parkinson's correspondence, periodicals and clippings related to Parkinson's work, and four original pen-and-ink drawings, probably created by Parkinson's wife, Ariel. The materials were created circa 1957-1972.

The Warner Perry papers include personal records related to Perry’s life and many hobbies. The major subjects of the collection are Perry’s magic documents, his personal papers, financial information, written works, invention designs, and family photographs.

The University of Delaware Library’s collection of books from the family library of the British artist Sir William Rothenstein (1872-1945) and his son, the art historian Sir John Rothenstein (1901-1992), numbers over six hundred volumes. The collection documents the important careers of the Rothensteins.

In this manuscript, entitled “Cours Théoriques de Tissage et de Broderie,” creator Léon Roux described the different methods of weaving and embroidering textiles as well as the patterns one could achieve by employing these techniques. The volume was created in 1902-1903.

These two manuscript notebooks are workbooks of geometric drawings and apparel pattern designs created by Emma D. Schall while she was a student at the Frauenarbeitschule Reutlingen in Reutlingen, Germany, in the late-nineteenth or early-twentieth century.
