Scope and Contents
Was sorry to hear of Messersmith's operation, but hopes his health now good; attended homecoming ceremonies for FBE (Brazilian Army); met Gen. [Mark W.] Clark and thought him fine; also met Ambassador [Adolf A.] Berle who passed on latest news of Messersmith; [Erich] Kleiber's concerts principal artistic events of season; has met Kleiber and wife often; talked much about Messersmith, for whom they have great affection; preparing to return to Europe; has chateau in France and doctors agree change of climate necessary for Mme Lupescu; things will be difficult, but after five years wandering, will be glad to be under own roof; will leave end of month for Lisbon and pause there before going to France; meeting in Potsdam looks promising; with such radical changes in England, all eyes now turned toward Truman; news from Rumania scarce; is concerned for her economy; grateful to Mexico and Brazil for their hospitality and especially grateful to Messersmith and Mrs. Messersmith; will write again from France; P.S. added by Mme Lupescu in which she sends greetings and love to Mrs. Messersmith; signed "Elena."
