 Collection
Identifier: MSS 0093-Item 0026

Scope and Content Note

This nineteenth-century children's scrapbook bears the initials "A.B." and the date 1891 in cross stitch on a small oval canvas label affixed to a red cloth cover. The scrapbook features both German and English trade cards; collectible scraps of flowers, animals, and children; visiting cards; New Year cards; color printed cartoons of Grimm fairy tales and rhymes in German; and other color printed images.

One of the Grimm fairy tales in the scrapbook is "Frau Holle" and the other is "Der Kleine Däumerling," which is the story of a little "thumbling" (Tom Thumb) character. Other color printed images are German rhymes, colored cards, and collectible scraps from James Pyle's Pearline (soap) and trade cards from Liebig Company's Fleisch Extract (meat). Some of the color printing processes include chromolithography and color lithography. There are a few black and white illustrations with captions in German, including one illustration of Princess Victoria of England at age two.
