The collection spans the dates 1811-1886 and consists of business and personal correspondence, legal documents, and receipts. The personal correspondence is primarily between Masten and his sons (names unknown). Legal documents regarding loans and land purchase, and receipts are also included. The collection is arranged in four series, according to type of document, and items in each series are in chronological order.

Biographical / Historical

Cornelius Masten was a mid-nineteenth-century resident of the town of Milo, village of Penn Yan, Yates County, New York State. He was a lawyer, the first judge of Yates County, and a Superior Court Councillor. He apparently had at least five sons, one of whom (Peter) was also an attorney.
