Scope and Contents
This volume contains a circa 1860 manuscript copy of Laurentius Terpager and Johanne Frisio’s history of Danish printing and typography, De Typographiae Natalibus in Dania Schedula Historica, originally printed in 1707.
The volume is bound with green leather and cloth and features gilt borders around the front and back covers. The spine has five raised, gilt bands and is gilt stamped with the text “TYPOG./DAN./TERPAGER/HAFN./1707.” The manuscript has marbled endpapers and red paper edges. There is a rectangular bookplate on the side of the front cover that reads “EX LIBRIS/Mark Watson.” Facing the title page, there is a hand-drawn frontispiece depicting the state coats of arms of Sweden, Denmark, and Norway above a castle with a moat. The manuscript’s text is handwritten in black ink within rectangular cartouches with red borders. The text describes the history of Danish printing and typography beginning in the fifteenth century. The text is primarily in Latin, but there are several quoted passages in early modern Danish. The manuscript mentions Gottfried von Ghemen, who printed the first book in Copenhagen in 1491. The volume consists of forty-seven leaves of unlined laid paper that contain fifty-six pages of handwritten text in black ink.

Biographical / Historical
This volume of De Typographiae Natalibus in Dania Schedula Historica appears to be a mid-nineteenth-century manuscript copy of the original Danish history of printing and typography, first printed in 1707. The original work was cited in Bigmore and Wyman’s A Bibliography of Printing, Volume 3 (2014), Petzholdt’s Neuer Anzeiger für Bibliographie und Bibliothekwissenschaft (1861), and Nova Literaria Maris Balthici & Septentrionis, Collecta Lubecae (1706). This manuscript was created on paper with the watermark of J. Green, a papermaking firm active from the 1630s to the 1950s.
