Account book for a Wilmington, Delaware, dry goods store
Scope and Contents
Daybook for an unidentified store located in Wilmington, Delaware, focusing on the sale of textiles and other dry goods. The daybook consists of daily transactions with names, items, and additional notes added in.
The store primarily sold items used to create clothing such as textiles, spools of yarn, buttons, and pins. Textiles frequently appearing in the book include silk, muslin, cotton, linen, flannel, cashmere, and gingham. Finished clothing accessories including shoes, hats, boots, and stockings were also offered. More general dry goods, such as soap, medicine, tobacco, stationary, crackers, and raisins were also sold.
The account book's format is that of a single entry listing of daily transactions with additional notes for payments added later. Most transactions are crossed out after accounts are settled and there are notations to distinguish repeat customer accounts. Many entries are accompanied by notations that indicate the transactions were transferred to another volume, probably a ledger.
The book begins September 30, 1859, and continues until at least January 1865. The final pages describe wages paid to several women, including Phebe Poole, who received part of their compensation in store goods.
The volume is loosely bound in blue paper. The word "Scratch" is handwritten in ink on the front cover.
