Biographical / Historical

The Granite Mansion Fund, Inc., was a non-profit grassroots organization formed during the late 1980s with the mission to protect and preserve the historic nineteenth century Granite Mansion house in Newark, Delaware.

Concerned citizens of Newark, Delaware, formed the Granite Mansion Fund, Inc. in response to plans to tear down the historic Granite Mansion house located at 292 West Main Street. The First Presbyterian Church was the owner of the historic structure but could not afford the maintenance costs associated with an old building. The Church permitted outside rescue operations to save the building with the condition that a community group lease the property for non-profit, non-conflicting use. The Granite Mansion Fund, Inc. was formed to realize this goal and worked with the City of Newark to develop a plan for a community-based recovery organization for first-time addicts to lease the building.
