Receipts (financial records)

The Archives of Georgetown, Delaware, businesses is the gift of Milt Chaski, Jr., who acquired the material in one "odd lot" at an auction sale. The collection consists primarily of materials related to three prominent businesses that were active in Georgetown, Delaware, at the turn of and into the mid-twentieth century: J.W. Blizzard, Layton & Layton, and the Georgetown Gas Company.

Personal and business papers of three generations of the Philadelphia-based Ashhurst family, including Richard Ashhurst (1784-1861); sons John Ashhurst (1809-1892) and Lewis Richard Ashhurst (1806-1874), partners with their father in the drygoods firm Richard Ashhurst & Sons; as well as the legal papers of Richard L. Ashhurst (1838-1911?).

The Ayer family Papers document the lives of two generations of the Ayer family, Joseph Cullen Ayer (1839-1918) of Massachusetts and Joseph Cullen Ayer, Jr. (1866-1944), the second son of Joseph and Carrie Ayer.

This collection consists of four volumes containing tax assessments, mathematical exercises, accounts, memoranda, and school compositions created by Mahlon and James Batten of Pencader Hundred, Delaware, between 1832 and 1874.

Receipts and letters related to services and materials rendered by Wilmington, Delaware, merchants to James Asheton Bayard, Senior and Junior, and the Wilmington Whaling company.

The Biddle family papers preserve over one-hundred-and-fifty years of material related to this prominent Philadelphia, Pennsylvania family and detail extensively their professional lineage as attorneys, notary publics, and bankers during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

U.S. Representative and Governor of Delaware, Benjamin T. Biggs, wrote a temperance speech, two love poems, and a letter to an editor. Also included is a bill from the Portsmouth, Virginia, Y.M.C.A. to a B.T. Biggs in 1917.

A note of exchange between Reynell Coats and John Bringhurst and Co., stating that thirty pounds sterling should be paid to Reynell Coates thirty dates after the date of the note.

The Brinton family papers document several generations of the Brinton, Steinmetz, and Ward families, who flourished between 1760-1930 in Pennsylvania and New York. Several members of the family played prominent roles in their communities and included landholders, real estate developers, merchants, Civil War surgeons, medical doctors and professors, missionaries, a minister, an art critic, an anthropologist, lawyers, a judge, an engineer, and several authors.

The Burd Family Papers concern the business, legal, and personal affairs of the Burd family, prominent lawyers and landowners from Philadelphia from the eighteenth to the nineteenth century, as well as the legal and business affairs of other branches of the extended family, including the Shippens and Coxes.

This volume is a receipt book kept by the Boston, Massachusetts, shipping firm of Thompson and Gridley for the period 1758-1765 and is interspersed with the diary of Robert Capen. The diary was written in 1811 and 1812. The entries document the weather and wind direction as well as occurances in the town of Canton, Massachusetts. There is also a single account for Samuel Capen of Canton to Robert Capen, for the period 1810-1812.

The Carty family papers, 1815-1912, represent nearly a century of the business activities as well as the personal lives of various members of the Carty family of New Jersey. The collection also includes papers of the Shreve family, which seems to have been related to the primary family in some way. The material consists mainly of receipts, account ledgers, and personal and business correspondence.

The papers of John W. Claghorn, a nineteenth-century businessman based in Boston and Philadelphia, include materials relating to his business and his family.

One autograph receipt issued by the Delaware Democrat Publishing Company to Mrs. Alva Williams, administratrix of F. E. Williams, for an 18 sheet sale bill advertisement on May 1, 1899.

This collection comprises material related to Independent filmmaker Sara Driver's short film You Are Not I (1981), based on the 1948 short story by American composer and author Paul Bowles (1910-1999) of the same name. Included in the collection is a variety of promotional materials, distribution information, and other ephemera from the film's initial release and early screenings.

One autograph receipt from Millville, Delaware, dry goods dealer E. C. Dukes to Mrs. Frank Williams for assorted dry goods on November 24, 1899.

Five receipts or notes made out to Wilmington, Delaware, cabinetmaker John Ferris from John Lea, Isaac Andrews, Henry Stidham, and Nathan Miller, as well as one note written by Ferris all spanning from 1775 to 1779.

The Girvin Family papers span from 1869 to 1910 and consist principally of personal and professional papers of turn-of-the century Philadelphian physicians Robert M. Girvin and his son, John Harper Girvin.

The Graff family papers primarily depict the business lives of three generations of merchants and tradesmen in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Philadelphia. The majority of the receipts, letters, and contracts with dates spanning 1750-1856 represent the business affairs of Jacob Graff, his son Jacob, and his grandsons Frederick and Charles Graff.

This collection features a letter, dated June 23, 1777, from Captain Robert Kirkwood of Newark, Delaware, to his father (Robert Kirkwood, Sr.) during the Continental Army’s New Jersey Campaign of the American Revolutionary War. The collection also contains military records related to officer appointments, muster rolls, subsistence rolls, and clothing supplies.

The William Livermore papers give a comprehensive account of the career of a U.S. Army engineer in the mid-to-late nineteenth century.

M.J. Ivers and Company was a publisher or cheap books, including several of the Beadle's Dime series during the late 19th century and early 20th century. Included in this collection are business receipts, correspondence, and publication lists. This archive represents only a small portion of material generated by M.J. Ivers and Company.
