Travel journal through the Mid-Atlantic

This journal of an early twentieth-century woman contains autograph entries describing eating, drinking, sightseeing, and shopping in New York City and several excursions within the Mid-Atlantic region in the 1930s. The entries are accompanied by numerous black and white photographs of locations visited during her trips.

The account begins on Saturday, May 4, 1935, when the writer arrived at her apartment in New York City. Nine photographs of the apartment and its view of the East River are pasted in. On May 5, the writer took an impromptu trip to Washington, D.C. A map of "Main Routes to Newcastle-Pennsville Ferry" (Newcastle, Delaware, and Pennsville, New Jersey) was inserted. The next day’s entry describes sightseeing in Washington. Printed photographs of the Smithsonian Museum, Lincoln Memorial, and Washington Monument are pasted in. That night, the party traveled through Annapolis (four pictures are included) to stay in Elkton, Maryland. On Tuesday, May 7, the writer visited New Castle, Delaware. Thirteen pictures of New Castle are pasted in. The party returned to New York the same night. Their route is described and an advertisement for "The Rainbow Room" with a humorous verse written on it in pencil is inlaid. The entry for Wednesday described shopping and a play. It is followed by photographs of skyscrapers which appear to be professional. Under the original writer’s heading "Thursday," an entry was written in a different hand and ink. On Friday, the first writer noted social visits and two photographs of Broadway at night are inserted. On Saturday, she traveled to Northampton via the George Washington Bridge (three photographs are inserted). On Sunday, the party toured the countryside. The journal ends with thirteen photographs from this excursion.
