One portrait of American salesman, author, publisher, and editor Elbert Hubbard (1856-1915), engraved on board by American artist Otto J. Schneider (1875-1946). The portrait is inscribed by Hubbard “To Dr. J. L. Bower, with all kind wishes from his friend Elbert Hubbard.” J. L. Bower was a resident physician of nervous and mental diseases at Philadelphia Hospital.

Otto J. Schneider (1875-1946)

Otto J. Schneider (1875-1946) was an American painter, illustrator, and printmaker. Schneider first studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, working as an illustrator in the city. He trained at the Art Students League in New York City and the Academie Julian in Paris. Schneider was a co-founder of the Chicago Society of Etchers. He was best known for his portraits of prominent men, including Abraham Lincoln, Mark Twain, and Theodore Roosevelt.

Elbert Hubbard (1856-1915)

Elbert Hubbard (1856-1915) was a American salesman, author, publisher, and editor. Hubbard began his career in sales for the Larkin Soap Company, eventually working his way into advertising. He is known for pioneering mass-marketing techniques including premiums and “try now, pay later.” In 1895, after seventeen years with the company, Hubbard retired to found the Roycroft Press in East Aurora, New York. Hubbard modeled his company on William Morris’s communal Kelmscott Press. The Roycroft Press expanded over time, encompassing artists, workers, writers, and philosophers working under the Art and Crafts movement. During this time, Hubbard began publishing a series of biographical essays known as Little Journeys," issued monthly. He also published two magazines, The Philistine, an avant-garde magazine of which he was the sole author, and The Fra. Hubbard is best known for his inspirational essay “A Message to Garcia,” published in The Philistine, about the perseverance of a soldier fulfilling his mission.
