Salmon Poetry Ltd. records supplement
Scope and Contents
The Salmon Poetry Ltd. records supplement contains administrative files and the press's publishing files for books produced between 2000 and 2011. Founded and directed by the American-Irish poet, Jessie Lendennie, Salmon Poetry Ltd. is noted particularly for its publication of poetry and its promotion of women writers. This supplement complements the core archival records of Salmon Publishing, Ltd., which was acquired by the University of Delaware Library in 1998.
The collection is arranged into two series: I. Publishing files; and II. Administrative files.
Series I. consists of materials related to the publication of new book projects produced by Salmon Poetry Ltd. between 2000 and 2011; material contributing to the publication of a work includes correspondence, manuscripts, page proofs, cover proofs, and publicity and promotional materials such as reviews, flyers, posters, invitations, and interviews.
At their most complete, these files document the entire publication history of a particular work from the initial contacts between author and publisher through negotiations over contract terms and related matters, the editing and revision of texts leading to publication, and the promotion and initial reception of the work. Most of the correspondence represented in this series consists of printed e-mail correspondence between the authors and Salmon's founder and managing editor Jessie Lendennie and production manager Siobhán Hutson.
The dates indicated for each project folder in this series refer to the date of the volume's publication by Salmon Poetry; material contained within each project folder generally dates to the time of publication, as well as to the year(s) preceding and following the volume's release.
Series II. is a small series containing general correspondence, publicity materials relating to Salmon Poetry Ltd., and catalogs.

Historical Note
Salmon Poetry Ltd. is a leading Irish and international publisher of poetry collections, particularly noted for its publication of women and new poets.
Founded by the American-Irish poet Jessie Lendennie and her husband, Mike Allen, in 1981, Salmon had its origins in the Galway Writers Workshop associated with University College, Galway. In 1982, Lendennie and Allen, both members of the Workshop, began publication of The Salmon International Literary Journal , a quarterly dedicated to "providing a forum for voices which were not being represented by the dominant literary outlets in Dublin." The Salmon ceased publication in 1991. Salmon began its book publishing activities in 1984 with collections by Eva Bourke and Rita Ann Higgins. Lendennie and Allen separated in 1987, and Lendennie remained as Managing Director of Salmon Publishing, Ltd. In 1994, Salmon Publishing moved its headquarters from Galway to Cliffs of Moher, County Clare, Ireland. In 2009, Salmon Publishing, Ltd. changed its name to Salmon Poetry Ltd.
Salmon Poetry Ltd. has produced over 300 volumes of poetry. Many now-established Irish poets published their initial collections with Salmon, including Rita Ann Higgins, Eva Bourke, Theo Dorgan, and Moya Cannon. In addition, Salmon has published a range of international authors including Adrienne Rich, Marvin Bell, Richard Tillinghast, Carol Ann Duffy, Ron Houchin, and Ben Howard. Although Salmon has never been exclusively a "women's press," it has been instrumental in discovering, publishing, and promoting the work of a significant number of Irish women poets.
